Spooky Blue Moon On Halloween 2020

October 31, 2020 Posted by Racheal Christian History, Stories

Ever used the phrase “once in a Blue Moon” to describe a rare event?  Well, you can do it today as the whole world is about to experience a rare Blue Moon on Halloween 2020. A full moon on Halloween roughly occurs every 19 years according to NASA. With full moons appearing every 29.5 days on average Halloween full moons are mainly Blue Moons. So what makes this blue moon such a rare event you may ask?

Well, it really depends on which ‘Blue Moon’ you are talking about. Because there are 2 different types. A monthly Blue Moon is the second full moon to appear in a calendar month. A seasonal Blue Moon is the third of four full moons to appear in a single season. Today we will be witnessing a monthly Blue Moon.

How Rare is the Blue Moon on Halloween 2020?

The Blue Moon on Halloween 2020 is a once in a lifetime event for some people. Astronomical Blue Moons are consistently seen every 2.5 years and on Halloween every 19 years. Although, due to different time zones around the world, not everyone gets to see it. For instance, some areas in the United States last saw a Blue Moon in 2001, while others haven’t seen once since 1955.  This will be the first time in 76 years, since 1944, that the entire world will get to experience a Blue Moon on All Hallows Eve. How cool is that!
