A full moon on Halloween roughly occurs every 19 years according to NASA. With full moons appearing every 29.5 days on average Halloween full moons are mainly Blue Moons. So what makes this blue moon such a rare event you may ask?
Well, it really depends on which ‘Blue Moon’ you are talking about. Because there are 2 different types. A monthly Blue Moon is the second full moon to appear in a calendar month. A seasonal Blue Moon is the third of four full moons to appear in a single season. Today we will be witnessing a monthly Blue Moon.

The Blue Moon on Halloween 2020 is a once in a lifetime event for some people. Astronomical Blue Moons are consistently seen every 2.5 years and on Halloween every 19 years. Although, due to different time zones around the world, not everyone gets to see it. For instance, some areas in the United States last saw a Blue Moon in 2001, while others haven’t seen once since 1955. This will be the first time in 76 years, since 1944, that the entire world will get to experience a Blue Moon on All Hallows Eve. How cool is that!

The combination of the Blue Moon, Halloween taking place during the change over to daylight savings, and falling on a Saturday makes it one of the rarest Halloween’s to ever take place. 2020 has been a strange year, why should we expect October 31st of that year to be any different?
